Scramble for Africa
The Scramble for Africa was the rapid partition and colonisation of most of the African continent by European powers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was given diplomatic form by the Berlin Conference of 1884–1885. It is discussed in the British Empire and Portuguese Empire profiles and in the Sokoto Caliphate profile, which describes the British conquest that ended the caliphate's independence.
