Dar es Salaam
Dar es Salaam is the largest city and chief port of Tanzania, on the Indian Ocean coast. Founded in the 1860s by Sultan Majid of Zanzibar, it became the capital of German East Africa in 1891 and the starting point of the Central Railway to Lake Tanganyika. It remained the capital under British rule and after independence, although Dodoma has since been designated the official capital.
