1832–1922 · 19th century · Also known as Sir John Kirk

Sir John Kirk was a Scottish physician and naturalist who accompanied David Livingstone on his Zambezi expedition and later served as British consul and agent in Zanzibar from 1866 to 1887. His close influence over Sultan Barghash helped secure the treaty of 1873 that closed the Zanzibar slave market and extended British power on the East African coast.
