Barmakids
The Barmakids were a family of Iranian origin, from Balkh, who served as viziers and administrators to the early Abbasid caliphs. They held great influence under Harun al-Rashid, patronising scholarship and organising government. In 803 Harun abruptly removed them from power, imprisoning and executing members of the family.
