Turkic peoples

Also known as Turkic

The Turkic peoples are a large family of ethnic groups speaking Turkic languages, originating in the steppes of Inner and Central Asia. The Gokturk Empire was the first state to bear the Turkic name, and Turkic groups later founded or dominated the Seljuk Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Khazar Khaganate and the Delhi Sultanate. As soldiers and slave-soldiers they also played a central role in the Abbasid Caliphate and the Mamluk Sultanate.
