Bathoen I
Bathoen I was chief of the Bangwaketse, a Tswana people of southern Botswana, from 1889 until his death in 1910, ruling from Kanye. In 1895 he travelled to Britain with Khama III and Sebele I to oppose the planned transfer of the Bechuanaland Protectorate to Cecil Rhodes's British South Africa Company, and their campaign persuaded the Colonial Office to keep the protectorate under the Crown.
