c. 1837–1923 · 19th century

Khama III was kgosi of the Bangwato in present-day Botswana from 1875 to 1923. A Christian convert, he banned alcohol, reformed customs and moved his capital to Palapye and later Serowe. In 1895 he travelled to London with two other chiefs, Bathoen of the Bangwaketse and Sebele of the Bakwena, to prevent the transfer of Bechuanaland to Cecil Rhodes's British South Africa Company, keeping the protectorate under the Crown.
