Battle of Alcoraz

1096 · 11th century · Part of the Reconquista

The Battle of Alcoraz was fought in November 1096 near Huesca, where Peter I of Aragon and Navarre defeated the army of the taifa of Zaragoza, which had Castilian support. Huesca surrendered shortly afterwards and became a royal seat of the kingdom. A later legend that Saint George fought for the Aragonese gave rise to the Cross of Alcoraz with four Moors' heads in the arms of Aragon.
