Battle of Beth Horon (66)

66 CE · 1st century · Part of the First Jewish–Roman War

The Battle of Beth Horon was fought in the autumn of 66 CE, when Jewish rebels ambushed the retreating army of Cestius Gallus, the Roman governor of Syria, in the Beth Horon pass north-west of Jerusalem. According to Josephus the Romans lost nearly 6,000 men, and the Legio XII Fulminata lost its eagle. The victory encouraged the revolt and led to the formation of a Jewish provisional government in Jerusalem.
