Battle of Clavijo

844 (legendary) · 9th century

The Battle of Clavijo is a legendary battle said to have been fought in 844 near Clavijo in La Rioja, in which Ramiro I of Asturias defeated a Muslim army with the help of Saint James, who appeared on a white horse. The story, first recorded in the twelfth century, supported the Voto de Santiago, a tax paid to the church of Compostela, and gave rise to the image of Santiago Matamoros. Historians regard the battle as fictitious.
