Battle of Hong

638 BCE · 7th century BCE

The Battle of Hong was fought in 638 BCE on the Hong River in Henan between the State of Song and the State of Chu. Duke Xiang of Song refused to attack the Chu army while it was crossing the river or before it had formed up, and was heavily defeated and wounded. The episode became a byword for misplaced chivalry and ended Song's bid for hegemony.
