Battle of Khotyn (1621)

1621 · 17th century · Also known as Battle of Chocim (1621) · Part of the Polish–Ottoman War (1620–1621)

The Battle of Khotyn was fought in September and October 1621 at the fortress of Khotyn on the Dniester, where a Polish-Lithuanian army under Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, aided by Zaporozhian Cossacks, withstood a much larger Ottoman army led by Sultan Osman II. The siege ended in a peace treaty that preserved the Commonwealth's frontiers. It inspired Ivan Gundulić's epic Osman.
