Battle of Khunan

1221 · 13th century · Also known as Khunan · Part of the Mongol invasions of Georgia

The Battle of Khunan was fought in 1221 in southern Georgia, where the Mongol vanguard led by Jebe and Subutai defeated the Georgian army of King George IV. It was the first Mongol attack on Georgia, part of a long reconnaissance raid around the Caspian Sea. The unexpected defeat broke the kingdom's military confidence, and it was followed by Khwarazmian and later full Mongol invasions.
