Mongol invasions of Georgia

1220–1243 · 13th century

The Mongol invasions of Georgia began with raids by the generals Jebe and Subutai in 1220–1222, which defeated the Georgian armies of King George IV. A full invasion in the 1230s overran the kingdom, and in 1243 Queen Rusudan accepted Mongol overlordship. Georgia remained a vassal of the Mongol Empire and then the Ilkhanate until George V restored its independence in the fourteenth century.
