Battle of Krusi

1796 · 18th century

The Battle of Krusi was fought on 22 September 1796 near Podgorica between the Montenegrins under Prince-Bishop Petar I Petrović-Njegoš and the army of Kara Mahmud Pasha Bushati of Scutari. The Montenegrins won a decisive victory in which Kara Mahmud Pasha was killed and his head was taken to Cetinje. The battle secured Montenegro's de facto independence from the Ottoman pashas and extended its rule over neighbouring highland tribes.
