Battle of Leyte

1944–1945 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Battle of Leyte began with the American landing on the island of Leyte in the central Philippines on 20 October 1944, when Douglas MacArthur returned accompanied by President Sergio Osmeña. The nearby naval Battle of Leyte Gulf destroyed much of the Japanese fleet, and by the end of 1944 the island was largely taken, opening the way to the liberation of Luzon.
