Battle of Levounion

1091 · 11th century

The Battle of Levounion was fought on 29 April 1091 in Thrace, near the mouth of the Maritsa, between the Byzantine Empire and the Pechenegs. Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, aided by Cuman allies, destroyed a Pecheneg horde that had threatened Constantinople, killing most of its warriors and their families. The victory ended the Pecheneg danger to the empire for a generation.
