Battle of Montes Claros

1665 · 17th century · Part of the Portuguese Restoration War

The Battle of Montes Claros was fought on 17 June 1665 near Vila Viçosa in the Alentejo, the last major battle of the Portuguese Restoration War. A Portuguese army under the Marquis of Marialva, advised by the Count of Schomberg, routed the Spanish army of the Marquis of Caracena. The defeat led Spain to recognise Portuguese independence by the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668.
