Portuguese Restoration War
The Portuguese Restoration War was fought from 1640 to 1668 after Portugal rebelled against Spanish rule and proclaimed John IV of the House of Braganza king, ending the Iberian Union. After long border warfare, Portuguese victories at Ameixial (1663), Castelo Rodrigo (1664) and Montes Claros (1665) led Spain to recognise Portuguese independence in the Treaty of Lisbon (1668).
