Iberian Union

1580 · 16th century

The Iberian Union was the dynastic union of the crowns of Portugal and Spain under the Spanish Habsburg kings, beginning in 1580 and lasting until 1640. Portugal kept its own institutions but was drawn into Spain's wars. Its overseas possessions were attacked by the Dutch and English, a significant phase in the decline of the Portuguese Empire.
