Battle of Nicopolis

1396 · 14th century

The Battle of Nicopolis was fought on 25 September 1396 at Nicopolis on the lower Danube, in modern Bulgaria. A crusading army led by King Sigismund of Hungary, with French, Burgundian and other Western knights, was routed by the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I. The defeat ended the last large-scale joint crusade of medieval Europe and left the Ottomans firmly in control of Bulgaria.
