Battle of Ponte Novu

1769 · 18th century · Also known as Battle of Ponte Nuovo · Part of the French conquest of Corsica

The Battle of Ponte Novu was fought on 8–9 May 1769 at a bridge over the Golo river in northern Corsica, between the forces of Pasquale Paoli's Corsican Republic and a French army under the Comte de Vaux. The French victory ended effective Corsican resistance, and Paoli went into exile in Britain soon afterwards. The island was then integrated into the Kingdom of France.
