Battle of Preveza

1538 · 16th century · Part of the Third Ottoman–Venetian War

The Battle of Preveza was a naval battle fought on 28 September 1538 off Preveza in north-western Greece, in which the Ottoman fleet under Hayreddin Barbarossa defeated the fleet of the Holy League commanded by Andrea Doria. The victory secured Ottoman naval dominance in the eastern and central Mediterranean for over three decades, until the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.
