Third Ottoman–Venetian War

1537–1540 · 16th century

The Third Ottoman–Venetian War was fought from 1537 to 1540 between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire under Suleiman the Magnificent. After an Ottoman siege of Corfu failed, a Holy League fleet under Andrea Doria was defeated by Hayreddin Barbarossa at Preveza in 1538. In the peace of 1540 Venice gave up its last possessions in the Morea and most of its Aegean islands.
