Battle of Staffarda

1690 · 17th century · Part of the Nine Years' War

The Battle of Staffarda was fought on 18 August 1690 near the abbey of Staffarda, south of Turin, during the Nine Years' War. A French army under Marshal Catinat defeated Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy and his Spanish allies, after the duke had joined the Grand Alliance against Louis XIV. The defeat exposed Piedmont to French occupation and plunder, as did a second defeat at Marsaglia in 1693.
