Battle of Stalingrad

1942–1943 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Battle of Stalingrad was fought from August 1942 to February 1943 for the city of Stalingrad, now Volgograd, on the Volga. After German forces took most of the city in brutal street fighting, the Soviet Operation Uranus in November 1942 encircled the Sixth Army, whose remnants surrendered under Friedrich Paulus on 2 February 1943. With casualties of around two million in all, it marked a turning point of the war.
