Battle of Britain

1940 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Battle of Britain was the air campaign fought over southern England in the summer and autumn of 1940, in which the Royal Air Force defended the United Kingdom against the German Luftwaffe. Germany's failure to win air superiority led Hitler to postpone the planned invasion of Britain indefinitely, the first major German defeat of the Second World War.
