Normandy landings

1944 · 20th century · Also known as D-Day, Operation Neptune · Part of the Second World War

The Normandy landings of 6 June 1944, known as D-Day, were the Allied amphibious and airborne invasion of German-occupied France that opened Operation Overlord. American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches, code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword, after airborne drops behind them. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history and led to the liberation of western Europe.
