Dunkirk

Also known as Dunkerque

Dunkirk is a port city on the North Sea in the Nord department of France, close to the Belgian border. Part of the County of Flanders in the Middle Ages, it changed hands repeatedly between Spain, France and England until Louis XIV bought it from Charles II of England in 1662. In 1940, during the Second World War, more than 330,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from its harbour and beaches.
