Condor Legion
The Condor Legion was a unit of German air and ground forces sent by Hitler to fight for Franco's Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. Made up mainly of Luftwaffe aircraft and crews, it gained combat experience and tested new tactics and aircraft, and its bombing of the Basque town of Guernica in April 1937 became a symbol of the horrors of modern war.
