Battle of Sybota

433 BCE · 5th century BCE

The Battle of Sybota was a naval battle fought in 433 BCE near the Sybota islands, off the coast of Epirus, between Corinth and its allies and Corcyra, supported by an Athenian squadron. It was among the largest sea battles between Greek states up to that time. Corinth had the better of the fighting but withdrew when Athenian reinforcements arrived, and the Athenian intervention was one of the causes of the Peloponnesian War.
