Gorgon

Also known as Gorgons

In Greek mythology the Gorgons were three monstrous sisters, Stheno, Euryale and Medusa, whose gaze turned onlookers to stone; the hero Perseus beheaded Medusa. The Gorgon's head, the gorgoneion, was widely used as a protective emblem on shields, temples, armour and coins. The pediment of the temple of Artemis on Corfu, of the early 6th century BCE, carries one of the best-known archaic Gorgon sculptures.
