Battle of the Garigliano (1503)

1503 · 16th century · Part of the Italian Wars

The Battle of the Garigliano was fought on 29 December 1503 on the river Garigliano between Lazio and Campania, during the Italian Wars. After weeks of stalemate, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba crossed the river by surprise and routed the French army. The French surrender at Gaeta in January 1504 left Spain in control of the whole Kingdom of Naples, which it then ruled for two centuries.
