Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme was fought from July to November 1916 in northern France during the First World War, between British and French forces and the army of the German Empire. It was one of the bloodiest battles in history, with enormous losses on both sides and little ground changing hands. The battle exemplified the attritional warfare that steadily wore down German military strength.
