Battle of Toba–Fushimi
The Battle of Toba–Fushimi, fought from 27 to 31 January 1868 south of Kyoto, opened the Boshin War in Japan. Forces of the Tokugawa shogunate, including troops from Aizu and Kuwana, were defeated by the smaller but better-armed armies of Satsuma and Chōshū fighting under the imperial banner. The former shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu fled to Edo, and many domains went over to the new imperial government.
