Battle of Tolbiac

c. 496 · 5th century · Also known as Battle of Zülpich

The Battle of Tolbiac was fought around 496 at or near Tolbiacum (Zülpich), west of Cologne, between the Franks under Clovis I and the Alemanni. According to Gregory of Tours, Clovis vowed to become a Christian if he won, and the Alemanni submitted after their king was killed. The victory is traditionally linked with Clovis's baptism, which made the Franks Catholic.
