Battle of Tryavna

1190 · 12th century · Part of the Uprising of Asen and Peter

The Battle of Tryavna was fought in 1190 in a pass of the Balkan Mountains near Tryavna, in present-day Bulgaria. The Bulgarian leaders Asen and Peter ambushed the army of the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelos as it withdrew from a failed siege of Tarnovo, and the emperor barely escaped. The defeat ended Byzantine attempts to crush the Bulgarian revolt and secured the restored Bulgarian state.
