Battles of Guararapes

1648–1649 · 17th century · Part of the Dutch–Portuguese War

The Battles of Guararapes were two battles fought in April 1648 and February 1649 on the Guararapes hills south of Recife in north-eastern Brazil. Portuguese, Brazilian, Indigenous and African forces of the Pernambuco insurrection defeated the army of the Dutch West India Company both times. The defeats confined the Dutch to Recife, which surrendered in 1654, and the first battle is regarded as the origin of the Brazilian Army.
