Bay of Pigs invasion

1961 · 20th century

The Bay of Pigs invasion was a failed landing in southern Cuba on 17–20 April 1961 by about 1,400 Cuban exiles trained and funded by the CIA, aiming to overthrow Fidel Castro. Without the hoped-for uprising or US air cover, they were defeated within three days and most were captured. The fiasco strengthened Castro, pushed Cuba closer to the Soviet Union and preceded the Cuban Missile Crisis.
