Benedetto Carushomo

12th century · 12th century · Also known as Benedetto Carissimo

Benedetto Carushomo was a leader of the medieval Commune of Rome who, in the early 1190s, took power as sole senator in place of the many senators of the commune. He ruled the city and its territory largely independently of the pope for about two years. His fall marked the end of the commune's most independent phase, though the Senate continued as a city office under papal sovereignty.
