Pope Clement III

d. 1191 · 12th century · Also known as Paolo Scolari

Pope Clement III, born Paolo Scolari in Rome, was pope from 1187 to 1191. A Roman himself, he made peace with the Roman Senate in 1188, recognising the commune in return for its acknowledgement of papal sovereignty, which allowed popes to return to the city. He also launched the Third Crusade after the fall of Jerusalem.
