Third Crusade

1189–1192 · 12th century

The Third Crusade was a military expedition by European Christian powers from 1189 to 1192, launched after Saladin recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. Led by Richard I of England, Philip II of France and, until his death on the way, Frederick Barbarossa, it recovered Acre and much of the coast. Jerusalem remained under Ayyubid control, and the war ended with the Treaty of Jaffa in 1192.
