Berel

Also known as Berel kurgans

Berel is a burial ground in the valley of the Bukhtarma river in the Kazakh Altai, in eastern Kazakhstan, with dozens of kurgans mostly of the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. Ice lenses in some mounds preserved wooden coffins, felt and the bodies of horses with elaborate harness, linked to the Pazyryk culture of the Saka-Scythian world. Systematic excavations there began in 1998.
