Bertha of Kent

6th century · 6th century · Also known as Saint Bertha

Bertha was a Frankish princess, daughter of the Merovingian king Charibert I of Paris, who married Æthelberht of Kent. A Christian, she came to Kent with her chaplain, Bishop Liudhard, and worshipped at St Martin's Church in Canterbury. Her presence probably helped prepare Æthelberht to receive Augustine's mission in 597, and she is venerated as a saint.
