Person
Æthelberht of Kent
Æthelberht was king of Kent from about 589 to 616 and the first English king to accept Christianity. Married to the Frankish Christian princess Bertha, he welcomed Augustine's mission from Pope Gregory I in 597 and gave it Canterbury as its base. Bede names him the third overlord of the southern English, and his law code is the earliest surviving document written in English.
