Pope Gregory I

c. 540–604 · 6th century · Also known as Gregory the Great, Saint Gregory the Great

Pope Gregory I, known as Gregory the Great, was pope from 590 to 604. He organised Rome's food supply and defence against the Lombards, making the papacy the real power in the Duchy of Rome. In 596 he sent Augustine to convert the Anglo-Saxons, a mission linked by Bede to his famous pun on Deiran slave boys.
