c. 1000–1078 · 11th century · Also known as Berthold the Bearded

Berthold I of Zähringen, called the Bearded, was a Swabian noble and founder of the power of the house of Zähringen. In 1061 he was made Duke of Carinthia and Margrave of Verona, but he hardly ruled there in person. He was deposed after supporting the anti-king Rudolf of Rheinfelden against Henry IV in 1077 and died the next year.
