Black Flag Rebellion

1875 · 19th century

The Black Flag Rebellion was an uprising of white diggers on the diamond fields of Kimberley, in the Crown colony of Griqualand West, in 1875. Led by Alfred Aylward and others, the diggers raised a black flag in protest against the government of Lieutenant-Governor Richard Southey, over licences, the power of large claim-holders and the right of black people to hold claims. British troops restored order, and Southey was recalled.
