Crown colony

Also known as Crown Colonies

A Crown Colony was a British colonial territory governed directly by the British crown, usually through an appointed governor, rather than through local self-government. The British Empire administered many of its territories in this way. The Ashanti Empire was formally annexed as a Crown Colony on 1 January 1902.
