Keate Award

1871 · 19th century

The Keate Award was the 1871 arbitration by Robert Keate, Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, of rival claims to the land around the newly found diamond fields of southern Africa. It upheld the claims of the Griqua leader Nicolaas Waterboer and of Tswana chiefs against the South African Republic. Waterboer then accepted British protection, and Britain annexed the territory as Griqualand West later that year.
